Few will ever reach the fame that a couple in Austin, Texas, has, but many will try.
John Henderson, who is 106, and Charlotte Henderson, who is 105, just broke the record for the oldest married couple, according to Guinness World Records. Together, they are 211 years old.
And on December 15, they will have been married for 80 years.
In 1934, they met in a classroom at the University of Texas, where they were both students and fell in love. In December 1939, they got married, and on their vacation, they stayed in a motel room that cost them about $7.
Then, what is the secret to their record-breaking marriage and long lives of more than 100 years?
John told USA Today in 2017 that he was living a sensible life. “We never do too much. Do not overeat. Rest up. Don’t get too drunk. Don’t eat too much. And move around a lot.
John is the oldest UT football player who is still alive and one-half of the oldest married couple. The two have also attended at least one University of Texas football game every year for the past 84 years.
“We had a great time when John quit. Charlotte said, “We went on a lot of trips.” I’m sure we just keep ourselves busy all the time, which helps.
The two now live an active life at Longhorn Village, where retired UT workers and alumni live.
